3Not a theatre projector
By Steven Lysen
I was sent two of these projectors to show movies at the public libraries on Maui. On the good side, it is plenty bright, even in a lit room. But what is bright washes out the contrast ratio, which this projector has 2000:1, which is half what I hear is necessary for a decent movie picture. It is also not 1080p, but in the neighborhood of 800 lines. It is also not 16:9, but 16:10, which means the edges are cropped out of the picture. And when there is white lettering on the screen, there will be blue on the left edge and red on the right, which means the 3 beams are not aligned (on both projectors). There is also NOT a component input, which is big, as HDMI can suddenly lose its handshake, and you have no component to fall back on. Actually, you do, but it requires an RGB to 3 RCA connector cord, which Epson sells as an accessory for $100. I took a chance and ordered one off of ebay for $5.16 including shipping and it worked perfect, even having gold connectors on both ends. There is also no DVI input (the white computer input), so Mac users will have to get a DVI/RGB crossover plug. I still haven't figured out how the keystoning works. It seems the more you try, the worse it gets, so just let the projector do its own - it kind of naturally corrects itself, but not exactly. The unit powers down with no waiting time for the fan to cool the bulb, which is pretty amazing. This thing will not get hot. Fairly lightweight and easy to handle. Internal amp is loud enough in an emergency situation, but is monaural. I was hoping to get the Viewsonic Pro 8200, which has everything you could desire, and cheaper with a better warranty, but some reviewers complain of a rainbow effect, which cancelled that option. I could only recommend this projector for use in bright rooms, and it is good as a data projector.
